A College Value - Commitment
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak to the College assembly about the third value that the College stands by, Commitment. It followed up on previous presentations about integrity and pride that jointly express the key values, exemplified in the acronym IPC as both the abbreviation for the college and the title of the three values, Integrity, Pride & Commitment.
Like the other values, commitment is an expression of both thought and action. For the students, we express it simply in terms of the everyday school behaviours, Right Time, Right Place and Right Equipment. But it is more than that, it is also about striving for improvement and personal excellence.
I used a short video clip at the assembly of a man splitting a huge boulder with a hammer and some wedges and posed to them the question – what do we learn from this seemingly impossible task?
Firstly, I think what we learn is, start with what you have. Don’t wait for the time to be right and all the best equipment and support.
Second, keep going. There must have been many times when this job seemed to be going nowhere.
Finally, if you have courage, then the rewards will come.
I hope everyone enjoys a happy holiday with their young men and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3.

Identity and Mission
As we finish off Term 2, planning is well under way for numerous events to raise Social Justice awareness in the College. This notion is becoming ever more pertinent in today’s society, when we see all around us injustices of every kind occurring. The aim of Term 3, under the Touchstone banner of ‘Justice and Solidarity,’ is to advocate and immerse ourselves in social justice in and around our great community. More information will be provided early next Term, but when planning all of this with the Identity and Mission team, the ‘feeding of the five thousand’ parable always comes to mind.
Most of us would be appalled as the Twelve if Jesus made this staggering demand of us. Feed five thousand people? On a fisherman’s salary? In the middle of nowhere? Give us some lead-time, a boat, some nets, some fundraising expertise maybe. Give us fair odds. Five thousand to twelve is unsurmountable by human standards. Five loaves and two fish would hardly make a satisfying meal for a dozen of them, much less for five thousand unexpected guests.
Two observations are useful here. 1) By human standards, it IS impossible, but Jesus never asks us to operate on human power alone. 2) In God’s eyes, there’s no such thing as unexpected guests. We should expect a guest at any moment because the world is our neighbour. These two points dovetail; the world is our guest, and our hospitality can never be enough unless we ground ourselves absolutely in God’s power to satisfy. Feed the world? Sure, we can. And more than just bread. Right now? No better time to start, because our guests are getting mighty hungry while we argue about this.
Do you believe that with God all things are possible? How do you demonstrate what you believe in how you live?
Take Jesus seriously. Begin feeding the world right now, starting with the next person you meet. Share your food, money, faith, time, company, laughter, and love. Decide on what seems a safe amount to share – then give more.
You will be drawn back to this meal again and again until the Master returns.
Thanks and have a great holiday.

Enrolments 2023
There has been a steady number of enrolments throughout this term, particularly for Year 7 2023. Existing parents are reminded that if they have a younger son that they wish to enroll for Year 7 2023 that they do need to enroll him through the normal process. The college cannot keep aside places for new enrollments for siblings of current students. Once places are full for 2023, the college cannot create additional places. It is likely that numbers will approach this limit by the end of the term.
Please get any outstanding enrollment forms in before this time to avoid disappointment.
Pathways Hub
Holiday Placements
We have a dozen students engaged in work experience during these holidays. Work experience is a great opportunity for students to gain an insight into possible career matches and determine potential future pathways post school. If you would like more information about how to organise work experience, please contact Mr Rossiter or Mrs Vignale in the Pathway Hub.
JCU UniX Excursion
This is happening in week 1 of Term 3. We will have 50 year 10 students attend in the morning session and 70 year 11 and 12 students in the afternoon. All these spots have been filled. Parents, please remember to login to your parent lounge and make the payment of $5 and approve your son’s excursion. Please also remind students to register online for this event using the link below.

JCU Heroes in Sport
An email has been sent to all year 11 and 12 students advertising the Heroes in Sport opportunity. It is being held on the 4-5 of August 2022. Students who would like to attend need to register here jcu.edu.au/heroesinsport to receive an application form. This is a very popular program and spaces are limited. If you wish to attend, ensure a thorough and timely application is submitted.
Townsville Careers Expo
An email has already been sent to all year 10,11 and 12 students and parents regarding the Careers Expo. This event is being held on Monday the 1st of August at the Townsville Stadium. The school will not be running a bus for this event, however, please feel free to attend during your own time. The College has already had major presenters speak to seniors’ students and with the UniX and subject showcase evening occurring early next term, we believe the students are well informed about pathway options. If you need any more information regarding the expo, please see the flyer which was attached to your email.

Hockey
IPC played Kirwan SHS over the last two weeks. Game one was Iggy dominated, with Kirwan going down 10 to 1. With this on their mind, for game two Kirwan brought their A Team to scare us. It did, for a moment, but we held strong keeping the score, 4 to 1, a respectable loss. Could call it a tie, or you could call it an IPC win using the good ol' For an Against statistical analysis....
Thanks to Mrs Putscher and Mr Farren for their hockey expertise.
TSS Cross Country Results
The results of the Interschool Cross Country teams’ event have just come through from the TSSS. Our boys did well to take out the Townsville A Grade Teams Championship. The Townsville event is held in conjunction with the North Queensland event.
Our boys not only competed well but were good ambassadors for the College during the day. The older lads helped carry gear, filled up water containers and helped with the set up and pack away of pop-up tents. The boys came back to school at 2:20pm to enjoy a swim and pizza.

Reader's Cup
Once again IPC entered a team into the annual “Reader’s Cup” state-wide competition organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and held this year at Southern Cross Catholic College. Designed to foster a genuine love of reading in students, this competition requires team to read 5 books and then work collaboratively to answer quiz style questions against other NQ schools.
Bravo to Marcus Carter, Jake Daldy, Caylan Rout and Tyler Shore who for the past 2 months, have been diligent in reading during their own time, then meeting each RECESS in the library – what great IPC spirit!
While the boys didn’t bring home the trophy, they came a commendable 5th out of 14 high schools and over 250 participants.
Well done boys!

The Arts
Film, Television and New Media
Yr 10 Film, Television and New Media
This Semester the year 10 students in Film, Television and New Media have been studying a photography unit. This term the assessment was to complete a case study on a well known Australian photographer. Throughout this unit the students looked at compositional elements and unique styles and techniques of Australian photographers in order to understand what makes a photo effective. Putting this acquired information into practice the students undertook a number of practical lessons where they focussed on different compositional elements. The photos below represent lessons on contre-jour ( taking a photo into the light) and getting up close and personal in a Macro style photography. Next Semester the students move on to a study of advertising and develop skills in filming and editing moving image.
