Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Farewell to our Year 12’s
Next Friday, 18th November, our Year 12's will finish their schooling days at Ignatius Park College with a final whole school liturgy and the tunnel of love in Edmund Rice Hall. This is the final journey of their rite of passage, as we farewell our 2022 Year 12 students and wish them God’s grace as they venture beyond the gates of Iggy Park. In the lead-up, next Wednesday, 16th November we will also hold our graduation for our Year 12's and their parents/families.
Graduation is a very special time and is also an important rite of passage for our graduating students. Our Seniors have been fine leaders throughout 2022 and have been generous with their time, particularly their involvement in all facets of our College life. I wish them well for the future and hope that they continue to represent the values of the College as they move into a new phase of their lives.
This year our College theme has been “Every Stride done with Pride” and our current Year 12’s have modelled this to our College community through our blue brigade and have left a legacy that will be carried forward by others who follow. Thank you to all our Year 12’s for your good sense of humour, your pride in our College and for maintaining Iggy Park’s high standards. Well done!
Success on the field
Congratulations to both our AFL and Rugby Union teams who both have had success on the field. Our AFL team won the Grand Final against Kirwan on 8 Nov (12.8 to 7.3) and has won every game in the knockout season after school. Thank you to Renee Deuble, Ty Mills and Tanya Couper for supporting this competition. Our 1st XV Rugby Union team travelled to Cairns last weekend to play St. Augustine’s College. This game has always been a tough competition, but Iggy Park defeated St. Augustine’s 19 – 17. Thank you to Paul Bruce, John Alloway and Matthew Fanning who supported the players on the weekend.
Our U14 Rugby Union teamed played St. Laurence College last week. We received the following positive email from the Assistant Head of Sport at the College:
Thanks again for the game on Saturday. I wish I had of recorded it. But I’m sure all the boys will remember it. I have received so many emails from the Lauries parents on how good a game it was, but more importantly how well mannered and pleasant your boys were to host.
Congratulations, I hope your school is proud of your young blokes.
Thank you to Mark Moxon, Michael Turner, Jerome Collier and Louka Demopoulos and their efforts in taking the U14’s away.
Year 11 Leadership Breakfast
Friday week ago, we celebrated our Leadership Breakfast where our current Year 11’s received their Year 12 tie, signifying that they are all leaders in our College Community. This was an important Rite of Passage as the tie represents the history of the College, the tradition passed on by thousands of students who have graduated through this College since 1969, and more importantly, their responsibility, as Year 12’s next year to continue to live the legacy and rich tradition of Iggy Park, that have been passed on by previous students of the College throughout the past five decades. On this morning we announced the House Captain and Vice-Captains for 2023.
Congratulations to the following students:
Putney Captain – Nathaniel Barton, Vice – Matthew Parker
Treacy Captain – Angus Bamford, Vice – Drew Roberts
Rice Captain – Samuel Keir Vice – Ryan Sutton
Reid Captain – Isaac Seri Vice – Alvine Njau
Nolan Captain – Matthew Lynch Vice – Hayden Moore
Carew Captian – Christopher Heagney Vice – William Buttigieg

Our 2023 College Captain, Nicholas Rowan gave his first speech to our new leaders, which was inspirational and I would like to share with our College community. If you would like to read Nicholas's speech please click on the link below:

Identity and Mission
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week at assembly we launched the 2023 St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. This is an integral event on our Social Justice calendar, in our Touchstone focus Term of “Inclusive Community” and the lead-up to Christmas. Nate Rasink and Mitch Waldon (new 2023 Prefects) did a great job in outlining the context and rationale for such a great cause to the audience. I ask you to see the picture below for a snapshot of what each House is responsible for donating this year and have your son/s bring in an item or two over the next few weeks and drop it in their House Bin near the tuckshop.
We also had a group represent the College at the Diocesan launch of the appeal with the other Catholic Schools in the Townsville area, hosted by Bishop Tim. Thanks to Mr. Raeside and the students for providing our hamper pack as an initial donation as part of this event.
New Ideas for Halloween
With the Halloween season just finished and becoming ever more popular in Australia we can reflect on the biblical associations of this holiday. As usual, the gospel is peopled with more characters than other readings, giving us lots to think about for masquerade purposes. You get a second chance to consider Jesus – though he is the historical person and not the post-resurrection “Christ” that Paul references in his letter. Would there be a difference between the two costumes of Jesus Christ, in your design? And how about “the Son of Man,” a particular title for Jesus, the meaning of which even scholars are divided about? If you had three people in costumes as Jesus – the Christ, the man, and the Son of Man – how would you distinguish them, if at all?
If that’s too much theology to handle at a Halloween party, you might take the easy way out and comes as Zacchaeus. (Note: Only short people could consider Zacchaeus since that’s his outstanding characteristic.) Nature lovers might take a shot at portraying the sycamore tree. Endless possibilities!
How many titles of Jesus can you name, and what does each reveal about who he is?
Okay, most people will not have a Halloween party on biblical themes. But using religious imagination to reflect on Scripture is a time-honoured tradition. Each Sunday, identify with a member of the biblical cast. Consider what you learn through this identification.
In all created things, O Lord, you find a spark of your immortal spirit.
Number us among your faithful people, O God. Ready for the roller-coaster ride of learning, prepared to relentlessly question “the way it has always been done,” never satisfied if people are suffering and authorities are complacent, ready to build community as a base for venturing out, looking always to Jesus, who took nothing for granted. Number us among your faithful people, O God. Amen.
Have a great fortnight everyone.

Industry Placement
Last week we had 70 Year 11 students participating in our Industry Placement program. This program is invaluable for enhancing our students’ employability skills and provides the opportunity for them to have a ‘real life’ work experience. We truly hope the students gained valuable life skills and now better appreciate the world of work.
Vet and Industry Placement (Blue Forms) - Urgent
Year 11’s who are currently doing Industry Placement have received a blue form from their homeroom teachers. This is to organise their Industry Placement for 2023, even if they are returning to the same employer a new contract will need to be signed. This needs to be completed and returned as quickly as possible to the pathway hub. If your son has misplaced his form, please can he come and collect a new one. Thank you to the families who have already handed their forms in. Those who have not, please ensure this is completed and returned by Friday.
Holiday Placements
It is now time to start thinking about Christmas/New Year Holidays. Work experience is a great opportunity for students to gain insight into possible career matches and determine potential future pathways post-school. If you would like more information about how to organise work experience, please contact Miss Campbell or Mrs Vignale in the Pathway Hub.

CHEMISTRY
RACI Certificate of Excellence in Chemistry and AIP Certificate of Excellence in Physics for Year 12 students.
The Australian Institute of Physics and Royal Australian Chemistry Institute recognises high achieving Queensland students with the 2022 Certificate for Excellence.
This certificate is awarded to students with a confirmed internal assessment result that is 90% or greater, that being 45/50 or greater (or an equivalent IB Level 7 for the International Baccalaureate) achieved in the internal assessment techniques.
Each of these institutes are dedicated to promoting the role of Chemistry and Physics in research, education, industry and the community. Some of the ways that the RACI and AIP support this goal is through promoting and supporting chemistry and physics teaching and education in schools, colleges and universities; encouraging investment in government and industrial research; and recognising distinguished contributions to these high-level sciences.
We congratulate the following students and recognise their diligence, curiosity, enthusiasm and achievements, and thought it pertinent to recognise students that have also excelled in the domains of Year 12 Biology and Year 12 Psychology.

JAPANESE
On Friday the 4th of November. Boys from the year 9 and 10 Japanese classes went to Gyo Japanese Restaurant to experience some Japanese culture and delicious cuisine. The boys sat down and immediately started practicing with their chopsticks. A few decided that a fork might be a good idea…but I was proud that everyone was willing to try! The meal started with miso soup which was a new experience for most. Some of the boys found it a little salty but most liked the taste and the bowls were soon empty. A lot of the boys paired their meal with Ramune. Ramune is a Japanese lemonade that is sealed with a glass ball. You need to use your muscles to press down on the ball to release the drink. Ms. Irvine chickened out and gave her drink to Kai Muirhead to open. A challenge indeed!
The boys choose a variety of dishes: okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake), yakisoba (fried noodles), curry udon ( thick wheat noodles), katsu don (fried pork, egg and rice) and the very popular karage don (fried chicken on rice). Everyone raved about the food and had a wonderful time.
I would like to thank Mrs. Quabba and Mrs. Martinez for their assistance and the boys for their excellent behaviour.

1st XV Rugby Union Cairns Trip 2022
IPC travelled to Cairns over the weekend to play against Saint Augustine’s College, an annual event that has not been a happy hunting ground for the Iggy Park 1st XV Rugby Union over the past few years. Travelling up on Saturday and being hosted by SAC overnight the boys were refreshed and ready to go on Sunday. Playing three-thirds of 20 minutes the first third produced some good rugby from both sides but the defence let IPC down and we went into break 10 - 7 down. Having spoken about line speed and committing to the breakdown Iggy improved on their first thirds performance but still seemed to be rushing things and not being able to settle – this said they went into the next break 14 - 10 up. The final third was more of the same with both teams playing some entertaining rugby and missing opportunities to end the game with IPC winning 19 - 17.
All in all, a very good trip with the boys displaying great character on the field and behaviour off the field. A big thank-you to Paul Bruce for giving up his time to drive the bus up and back and to John Alloway and Matthew Fanning for their time in taking the boys away.
Tries – Aiden Knowles, Andre Corradini, Lleyton Dooley
Conversions – Marley Scarff (1), Mitchell Waldon (1)
MVPs – (3) Sean Weir, (2) Jayden Chilby, (1) Jarel Hemmings

Junior AFL Grand Final
Not only have the AFL boys progressed through the season undefeated they have claimed victory in the Grand Final, played at JCU oval.
Our Iggy boys muscled up against Kirwan High in the Grand Final of the AFL season yesterday and came out victorious. We not only battled a tough side with Kirwan, we also battled a family of plovers that had nested in the middle of the field, cautiously we removed the eggs to the side-lines, however the plovers were still out for blood, swooping our boys in the midfield making it an even tougher contest.
It was a physical game against Kirwan High, nonetheless our boys played as a united team, with heart, determination, and integrity. The Kirwan High boys had only 11 players, and in the name of sportsmanship, Coach Deuble benched our players to make it an even contest, 11 on 11. Having said this, we dug deep and showed them what the 'Park Men' were made of, with the final score Ignatius Park 12-8-80 to Kirwan 7-5-47.
A big thanks to the coaching and support staff to enable this competition to go ahead and give the boys the opportunity to take every stride with pride on the footy field.
Full players team list:
Ryder Alderton, Koby Baban, Nayte Essery, Hayden Griffin, Callum Hopkin, Kye Lange, Ashton Leeming, Mason Lord, Oliver Nguyen, Cooper Pain, Tyler Pearce, Cooper Reinders, Myles Rosemond, Daniel Spicer, Ryan Thompson, Ben Turner, Leslie Trimmer
Library Resources
With the end of the year fast approaching, it is a good opportunity to remind all students and families of their responsibilities regarding the safe return of all Library resources borrowed. As per College policy, once students are no longer in need of their loaned resources, they need to be returned to the Library by the student himself so that individual borrowings can be cleared. It is important to note that each textbook has a unique barcode attached, and this barcode is how we can identify which textbook is issued to each student. For this reason, we ask that students ensure they are always in possession of their textbooks for safe keeping and not mix them up with other students.
Any resources not returned by the end of week 8, or damaged in any way, will need to be paid for via the College office BEFORE any report card will be issued.
Thanks as always for the wonderful support and care shown of our Library resources. If families have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
