Dear Parents and Carers,
Preparing for the world beyond
I believe one of the greatest challenge’s schools have always faced, and what is even more important now in such an ever-changing world, is to try to prepare students for their life beyond school. While academic achievement is important, the necessity to be good people, resilient characters and emerging adults who understand life is not always about themselves, but rather about great love and happiness and this comes from within when we give of ourselves to others. As part of our Catholic Studies course, our students go out into our community to provide service to others. Some of our students ventured to Stockland Shopping Centre and assisted elderly people in carrying shopping bags, pushing trolleys, reaching high items on the shelves or walking to the other end of the supermarket to collect specific items for them. Last week one of our students Adam Sievers from Year 11 Treacy helped a lady named Robyn. Robyn was in a mobility scooter and had an oxygen mask on. Adam assisted her throughout her shopping, and she was in tears at the checkout as she was so blown away. She then thanked the school, the teacher Mr. Guerra, the students, and their parents for raising fine young men. Adam received the Touchstone Award – Gospel Spirituality last week at the assembly.
Last week students participated in our Work Placement within our local community. It was so pleasing to hear the positive feedback from businesses on the quality and integrity of our students and the initiative they display in the workplace setting. For some of our students, this has resulted in them attaining a school-based apprenticeship. At Iggy Park we provide various options for our students as they progress through their secondary years – University, TAFE, VET courses, Apprenticeships etc. As a College, I believe we enable every student to be encouraged to follow their dreams, and their own specific pathway, and to be supported in making that dream a reality. It is such a credit to all our staff, teaching and non-teaching who are so friendly and welcoming, always showing genuine care for the students and families. I am sure Edmund Rice and all our predecessors would agree. We have a great deal to be proud of here at Iggy Park, but we also remain committed to continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence in all we do.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Mr Tom Lucas and his partner Kiri on the birth of their daughter Sabrina May Lucas last week.

Harmony Week
Yesterday was the commencement of Harmony Week (15 – 21 March). Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect, and belonging for all, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. Our Touchstone inclusive community calls us to acknowledge how our country is made up of people from many different places on earth, the ways in which we can be similar and the ways in which we are unique; but ultimately, the way in which we are all part of God’s creation. Harmony Week reminds us to be proud of who we are and to have a strong sense of belonging and identity. Belonging acknowledges interdependence with others and the importance of relationships.
At Ignatius Park College, our relationships are underpinned by our call to love one another. With the current climate of the world today, it is important to take the time to remember this and centre ourselves. Pope Francis celebrated this week his 10th anniversary as pope with a private Mass with cardinals. He stated some of the most painful moments during his papacy were meeting people connected to the horror of war, including visits to military cemeteries, the 2013 prayer vigil for peace in Syria, and the current war between Russia and Ukraine. Pope Francis also stated: The gift he most wants for his anniversary is “peace”. During Harmony Week, may we continue to pray for world peace.

St. Patrick’s Day
Tomorrow we celebrate St Patrick’s Day. He is one of the few saints who is celebrated so widely around the world. St Patrick is not only known for bringing Christianity into Ireland but had enormous faith and the belief that we are invincible with the presence of God within us and around us. Irish legend has it that St Patrick sang the song below (St Patrick’s Breastplate or Deer’s Cry) when an ambush was laid against his coming by King Loegaire, so he could stop him spreading his faith. It is believed that God transformed St Patrick and the monks into wild deer with a fawn and they walked past those lying in ambush unnoticed. This prayer has its origins in the Eighth Century and is a prayer of protection.
As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.
May Christ shield me today.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,
Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
Amen."

Third Week of Lent (Week beginning Monday 13 March )
We are now in the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Priscilla, who lives in the Hwange district in Zimbabwe with her husband, Charles, and two of their grandchildren. Climate change continues to bring unprecedented challenges for people living in the most vulnerable and remote communities in Zimbabwe.
During times of intense drought and food shortages, Priscilla had to commute to the town centre and wait in long queues to collect food.
With the support of Caritas Hwange, Priscilla learnt conservation farming skills to grow drought-resistant crops and started poultry farming to support her family during the current food crisis. Priscilla was able to produce a bumper harvest in her first year of practising in conservation farming. Priscilla also used the funds from her harvest to start poultry farming, which enabled her to sell eggs to pay for her grandchildren’s school fees, books and stationery. The poultry farming provides a safety net for Priscilla and her family during times of hardship, like the current drought.
While the situation in Zimbabwe and across eastern Africa remains dire, the work of Caritas Hwange means that Priscilla can learn the techniques, tools and resources she needs to build resilience and support her family during this current food crisis.
Watch a short film about Priscilla’s story here.
We are supporting Project Compassion right up until our Easter Mass on Friday of Week 9 at 2pm, so please offer your support when your son/s come home and ask for a gold coin or two for a great cause!
Don't forget the St Patrick's Day Breakfast Fundraiser - Tomorrow!!

Industry Placement
Last week 150 Year 11 and 12 students participated in our Industry Placement program. Congratulations to all students who took part in this program as it’s invaluable for enhancing our students’ employability skills and provides the opportunity for them to have a ‘real life’ work experience. The majority of the feedback we received from our employers was positive, and this helps to maintain our working relationships with them. We truly hope the students gained valuable life skills and now better appreciate the world of work.
Could parents please remind their sons that their logbook is to be returned by tomorrow (17/03/2023) fully completed otherwise, they will receive a detention.
If the student wish is to change placements for Term 2, they must have the purple Change of Placement form completed and lodged with the Pathways office by Friday, 19 May 2023 (Week 5).

North Queensland Rugby Union
On Tuesday, 14 March, the NQ U18 Schoolboys Rugby Union trials took place, and they were an intense affair. With 51 players from the NQ region vying for spots on the NQ team, the competition was of a very high standard which made it hard for selectors. To add to the challenge, the trials were held in extremely hot conditions, which made it all the more impressive that the players were able to perform at such a high level.
IPC was particularly well-represented at the trials, with 18 boys trialling. Of those 18, an impressive 9 were successful in earning spots in the NQ team, which is a testament to the quality of rugby players at IPC.
The following IPC students were successful in the trials and will travel to the Gold Coast in May to play in the Qld Championships and selection for the Qld Schoolboys team:
- Reagan Knowles
- Jayden Chilby
- Mitchel Waldon
- Marley Scarff
- Josh Morton
- Stewart Gordon
- Sean Weir
- Jack Bragg
- Andre Corradini
Congratulations to these students on their achievement, and we wish them all the best in their quest for further success in the Qld championships

The following IPC students were successful in the trials and will travel to Brisbane in May to play in the Qld Championships:
