    From the Principal

    Dear Parents/Carers and Students,

    Welcome back to Term 3. We hope everyone had a restful and restorative break. As we begin a busy and exciting term, we look forward to continuing our shared work in supporting your son’s academic, social and spiritual development. It was great to see so many parents at our parent teacher evening last night. For those who could not make it, I would encourage you to contact your son’s teacher via email if you have any concerns on their progress.

    Over the first week of the holidays, our First XIII travelled to Rockhampton for the Confraternity Shield. We are incredibly proud of our students, and while we narrowly missed out on claiming the Shield, the determination, teamwork and sportsmanship displayed throughout the week reflected the true Iggy spirit. The team went through undefeated but were sadly bundled out as the other team was the first to score in the knockout stages. Thank you to our coaching staff, support team and travelling families for your dedication and commitment, and I have no doubt that the team will finish off their season well in the Aaron Payne Cup.

    After a long six months, it has been great to see classes back in the science labs this week as we reoccupy these spaces. While we are still waiting on some furniture to arrive, and our screening at the front of the building is still to be completed, the labs have provided a welcome space for our science students and teachers. We will share photos once the project is fully complete, and I am looking forward to seeing the students make the most of these cutting-edge spaces.

    This week and next, students will be engaging in subject selection conversations and processes for 2026. Parents of year 9 and 10 students have been sent information regarding the subject selection evenings being held next Monday. It is imperative that families attend these evenings (particularly Year 10 families) as crucial information regarding the senior schooling process will be presented, along with information on VET, Uni and alternate pathways, which are key to all students remaining engaged in their senior studies for the next two years. I look forward to seeing you there.

    We were thrilled to have renowned clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller to our College last week for a special parent session. Andrew worked with our staff throughout the day, looking at engagement strategies for boys, then shared valuable insights into adolescent learning, resilience and wellbeing with our parents at night. These sessions are part of our ongoing commitment to supporting not just our students, but our entire community.

    Call for Expressions of Interest – College Advisory Council
    Our Expressions of Interest in joining our College Advisory Council are still open for application. If you are interested in becoming a Council member, please complete the form via this link CAC Expression of Interest Form.
    Each school within EREA has a College Advisory Council that work with the College Leadership Team in supporting the direction and growth of the College. Members typically serve a 3-year term, with meetings held approximately 9 times throughout the year. As a general rule, the make-up of the Advisory Council is based on skills and experience with the aim being that we look to recruit members with varied experiences that allow the Council to best support the leadership of the College.

    Curriculum Corner

    Welcome back to Term 3. It is an extremely busy term for students across all year levels,  starting with Parent-Teacher Conferences in week two and Subject Showcase in week three.

    Now that you have met with your son’s teachers at these conferences, we strongly recommend that you have honest discussions about the teacher feedback you have received.  The sooner any necessary changes to study habits or routine are implemented , the better the chance for improved outcomes.

    This term is a very important one for our current Year 9 and Year 10 students who will be focusing on their 2025 subject selections and future pathways.

    SUBJECT SHOWCASE EVENING | SUBJECT SELECTIONS FOR 2026

    Our Subject Showcase Evening is an important information-sharing event that extends on this advice. We invite, and strongly recommend, that all Year 9 and 10 parents and students attend this evening.

    The Director of Curriculum, Ms Lesley Gardner, will present important information to assist students with subject selections and intended career pathways. Students and Parents/Carers will also have the opportunity to speak with Faculty Leaders and Teachers about subject requirements and discuss in further detail the subjects on offer. Parents, Carers, and students are encouraged to read through the Subject Information Handbook, which can be found online:  https://www.ipc.qld.edu.au/studies/curriculum-handbooks/

    Students currently in Years 9 and 10 this year will be required to nominate subject preferences after the event. Information and unique login details on how to access the Subject Preferences Portal will be sent to each student’s email prior to the event. Staff will be available to assist students with their selections in the portal.

    VARIATION TO ASSESSMENT – AARA‘s (Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments)

    A general reminder about our AARA process:

    • As per the College’s Assessment Policy, requests to vary the conditions or due date of any assessment item can only be considered following the submission of an Access Arrangement and Reasonable Adjustment (AARA) form and appropriate supporting documentation.
    • The completed AARA form, along with required documentation (i.e. detailed medical certificate and details of absence) must be submitted to their Subject Faculty Leader or the Edmund Rice Office.

    A copy of the AARA form is available on the school website at: https://www.ipc.qld.edu.au/studies/exams-assessment-study-documents/. Alternatively, hard copies of this form are available from the Edmund Rice Office.

    Identity and Mission

    Dear Parents & Carers,

    This Term is a big one in the life of the college; Identity & Mission wise. There is a very strong Social Justice theme in Term 3, which sees lots of activity and community work happening. Just a few of the things to look out for when your son comes home discussing them: Catholic Studies Volunteering with Year 12's, SVDP Homeless Sleepout, Brooklea Elderly visits, Year 12 Drop-in-Centre visits… just to name a few!

    Please encourage your son to get involved in as many of these initiatives and causes as possible; a little from many goes a long way! In planning all these events, it got me thinking about how we are teaching our students not just to “do” these things blindly, but the advocacy behind “why” we “do” these things. How do we prepare them? How does the work we do flow through to the boys' lives outside of school? All things we aim to answer with each and every social justice action we undertake.

    Week 3 sees us host our annual Homeless Sleepout, and we look forward to updating you in the next Newsletter as to its success in raising awareness of this issue in our society. 

    CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK IN QUEENSLAND

    Catholic Education Week is an annual state-wide event that promotes the distinctive mission of Catholic schools throughout Queensland. 

    The week 27 July - 2nd August is celebrated by all schools through a range of liturgies, events and activities. 

    The Catholic Education Week 2025 theme is " Communities of Faith, Hope and Love". 

    A Mass to mark the official launch of Queensland Catholic Education Week 2025 will be held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Townsville on 29 July and on the evening prior, awarding of the High Schools Dues Caritas Est Award and Catholic Education Week Staff Award Winners for 2025, both are live-streamed and links available on social media pages. We will have a number of students attending to represent IPC! 

    Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

    New Approach to Late Arrivals at Ignatius Park College

    At Ignatius Park College, we are dedicated to supporting students in building habits that lead to success—both at school and beyond. One of the most important of these habits is punctuality. Being on time each day ensures students start their learning positively and with focus, setting the tone for the rest of the day. At this fantastic school, community is built through casual conversation, mateship is forged through spending time with one another and belonging is fostered through a sense of safety and surety. Being at school early provides the opportunity for those building blocks to thrive.

    From Week 2 of this term, a new approach to managing late arrivals has been implemented. Our day begins at 8:30am, and all students are expected to be at school, ready to begin, by this time. Students who arrive late are required to present a written explanation in their diary from a parent or caregiver. This note helps us distinguish between unavoidable lateness and patterns that need further support.

    If a student arrives late without a written reason, parents will receive an SMS notification to inform them of the unexcused late arrival. Please note: under our policy, students who are late five times without explanation may be required to attend a meeting with College staff, and if the issue remains unresolved, contact will be made with parents to address the issue more formally.

    Uniform Expectations at Ignatius Park College

    At Ignatius Park College, our uniform is a visible symbol of our pride, unity, and high standards. It reflects the values of respect and personal responsibility that are central to our College community. We thank families for continuing to support the correct wearing of the uniform each day.

    As a reminder, Students are expected to wear the full College uniform neatly and with pride—this includes polished shoes, ironed, clean shirts tucked in, and haircuts that meet College guidelines. The Sports uniform is only to be worn on designated days when the student has PE on his timetable, and the College hat must be worn when in outdoor spaces.

    We remind families that jewellery is limited to a watch and a single religious necklace tucked inside the shirt. Non-regulation items (such as hoodies, caps, or sneakers) are not to be worn at school.

    By maintaining a consistent and respectful appearance, our students demonstrate their commitment to the values of Ignatius Park College in everything they do.

    Skills & Training

    Welcome back to term 3 – a very busy and exciting time for our senior students.

    Industry placement is in week 7, Monday 25th August – Friday 29th August. This will be the last time our Year 12 boys have a scheduled industry placement week. Many of our boys have been discussing apprenticeship and job opportunities for life after high school, and this scheduled placement week is a perfect time to do this.

    Additionally, if your son would like to complete some work experience in term 4, please advise him to come to the Pathways Hub where we can support him with the necessary insurance paperwork. Until your son graduates, he must have the necessary paperwork to cover him for insurance purposes for work experience.

    A reminder if your son would like to change his final placement, he will need to complete a change of placement form and return this to the Pathways Hub by the end of week 3 – this applies to year 11 and 12 students.

    The focus for our year 12 students in term 3 is to finalise their external certificate courses. This is critical to their success and QCE attainment. If your son is behind in his online assessments for his certificate courses, he will need to come into school during block exams and complete some catch-up sessions to ensure successful completion.  This information will be relayed directly to students as necessary.

    Congratulations to those boys who are continuing to be signed up for school-based apprenticeships – Jedd Giddy completed a sign-up during the school holidays with Chris Jang Air. Well done, Jedd (see photo below).

    The next round of TAFE at the school’s intake is scheduled for mid-August. I will email all year 10 and 11 parents and families about this 2026 TAFE intake with details of how to complete a TAFE application.

    Careers Hub

    Welcome to Term 3! It's shaping up to be a busy and exciting term. Year 10 students will begin the important process of selecting their senior subjects and finalising their SET Plans, setting the foundation for their future pathways. Our Year 12 students are now focused on turning their post-school goals into action, with university applications becoming a top priority for those pursuing tertiary study. For students aiming to enter the workforce, secure apprenticeships or traineeships, Term 3 is the ideal time to start building industry connections, especially through work placement opportunities. With so much happening, it's sure to be a fast-paced and rewarding term! 

     JCU Open Day – Friday 18 July  

    Students in Year 10 and 11 had the opportunity to attend the James Cook University (JCU) Open Day for Schools last Friday. It was a great day for our students to engage with Academic staff and current students to understand what University has to offer and the learning courses available. 

     Save the Date – CQU Open Day – Thursday 14 August – 4.00pm to 6.00pm 

    Students can get a closer look at their options, take control, and launch into their future at Open Day. It's a great opportunity to:  

    • discover a passion and a career 
    • choose a pathway to study 
    • chat with our specialist lecturers about courses and work-integrated learning opportunities embedded throughout 
    • meet the team at the Support Hub to talk about applications, scholarships, student support, and uni life.

     Townsville Careers Expo – Monday 4 August  

    Students in Year 10, 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to attend the Townsville Careers Expo next month. It is North Queensland’s largest and most comprehensive careers, employment, and training event. The 21st annual expo will be held on Monday, 4 August 2025 at the Townsville Stadium, Murray Sporting Complex (Annandale). It's a perfect one stop experience for anyone mapping their career path, with expert advice, hands on demonstrations, and networking under one roof. Students interested will need parental permission through Parent Lounge. Spaces are limited so secure your spot early.

You’ll go behind the scenes at the Cowboys Community, Training and High-Performance Centre, and learn from industry experts in physiotherapy and sports and exercise science before hitting the field for a high-performance training session.     Registrations for the QTAC ATAR Portal open on Tuesday, 5 August 2025. QTAC applications for courses starting in 2026 will also open. All students interested in applying to university will receive further information soon with important details regarding the upcoming application process.  

     Australian Defence Force Gap Year Program – Applications Open 

    If students are interested in a position with the Australian Defence Force, the Gap Year Program may be a good option to explore. This program allows students to experience an ADF position, basic training, and the military lifestyle for 12 months. At the end of this time, they can either choose to begin the process of full enlistment or move to other pathways outside of the ADF. This program can be helpful for students contemplating the ADF but unsure if it is the pathway they really want. Please see HERE for more information.

     AECOM Cadet Opportunity – Year 12 Students  

    AECOM currently have a role for a Cadet – Assistant Technical Officer in their Transport team. A cadet in our organisation is typically a school leaver or mature-aged student who works a full-time job under the guidance of experienced designers and engineers to produce design models and documentation for transport projects for our key clients. This is in conjunction with studying an Associate Degree of Civil Engineering on a part-time basis, which, upon successful completion, is fully paid for by the business.     Australian Mathematics Competition

    Australian Mathematics Competition

    The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is a prestigious event that challenges students with a variety of engaging and thought-provoking mathematical problems. The competition is divided into levels to suit different year groups:

    • Junior (Years 7–8)
    • Intermediate (Years 9–10)
    • Senior (Years 11–12)

    This year, Ignatius Park College has invited approximately 40 students from each year level to participate, based on their Mathematics results and NAPLAN numeracy performance.

    Competition Dates:

    • Years 7–8: Tuesday, 5 August
    • Years 9–10: Wednesday, 6 August
    • Years 11–12: Thursday, 8 August

    If your son has been selected and you would like him to participate, please ensure you accept the event via Parent Lounge by Thursday, 31 July.

    2025 Confraternity Carnival Wrap-Up

    2025 CONFRATERNITY CARNIVAL WRAP-UP

    From Monday, 30 June to Friday, 4 July, a proud group of 21 young men represented Ignatius Park College at the 2025 Confraternity Shield in Rockhampton. In what can only be described as a week of grit, the boys not only went through the entire carnival undefeated, they did so while upholding the true spirit of Iggy Park: integrity, pride and commitment.

    The carnival opened with a physical 0–0 draw against a well-drilled St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon. It was a battle of the middle and a defensive statement that set the tone for our campaign. Up against a 12-2 penalty count, the defensive effort displayed by the boys was something to admire as they stayed together and continued to turn Brendan’s away.

    Later that day, the boys bounced back in style, delivering a comprehensive 30–6 win over Aquinas College. Tries from Jerry Mipari, Solomon Terare (2), Hayden Griffin, Suafai Reupena and Ryder Soper, along with strong conversion work from Chase Sheppard and Marley Hinsbey, showed the attacking firepower this group possesses.

    Tuesday’s first match saw us face Marist College, Ashgrove. The boys held firm in a fast-paced, scrappy contest, running out 20–10 winners on the back of four excellent tries, including a double to Byron Piggott and strong performances across the park.

    That afternoon, we faced Aaron Payne Cup rivals St Patrick’s College, Mackay in a crucial quarterfinal. In a game that will live long in our memories — and not necessarily for the right reasons — the match ended in a draw. But under the carnival’s first try scorer rule, we were heartbreakingly knocked out of the hunt for back-to-back confraternity shields. Despite another double from Solomon Terare and a defensive effort to be proud of, our campaign for the shield itself was cut short in the cruellest of fashions. While it hurt, the way the boys responded afterwards said more about them than any scoreboard ever could.

    Thursday saw the Park bounce back with a convincing 30–12 victory against St Augustine’s College, Cairns, with tries to Solomon Terare, Brodie Pritchard, Jerry Mipari, Cooper Reinders, Ryder Soper, and Marley Hinsbey. In a game where the group had so many reasons not to get up and rip in, the boys dug deep for the jersey, and our attack began to click as the boys were clearly playing for one another.

    We finished the week with a huge 48–10 win over Shalom College, Bundaberg. In arguably our most complete performance of the carnival, the boys piled on nine tries, including a hat trick to Jerry Mipari, a double to Solomon Terare, and standout efforts from Ryder Soper, Nayte Essery, and Marley Hinsbey.

    A special mention must go to captain Sitiveni Afu and Solomon Terare for their well-earned selection in the Queensland merit team. This is a massive effort from these men and something the college is very proud of.

    Across the 6 games, we scored 23 tries and conceded only 9, highlighting our dominance in both attack and defence. Every player in the squad contributed, from the forwards laying the platform, to the backs finishing their opportunities with class.

    To go through a carnival of this calibre without losing a single game is an outstanding achievement. While the quarterfinal draw was tough to swallow, it revealed the character of this group, they regrouped, refocused, and finished with pride. The boys represented Ignatius Park with integrity, pride and commitment. They should be incredibly proud of themselves.

    The squad also received praise for their sportsmanship, behaviour, and respect toward officials, opponents, and the wider community, upholding the core values of both Ignatius Park and the Confraternity Shield tradition.

    A sincere thank you to the parents, staff, and supporters who travelled and followed the boys throughout the week. Your support lifted the squad when they needed it most.

    To the boys, you did more than play footy. You represented a tradition, a college, and one another with pride. To go through Confraternity undefeated and be denied a shot at the Shield by a technicality is tough, but you held your heads high, and you finished strong.

    Confraternity Shield 2025 will be remembered for its resilience and brotherhood. This group has set a standard for future Iggy teams to follow.

    Well done, gentlemen.

    Congratulations to the Year 7 & 8 soccer team, who are the Townsville School Sport Secondary Association inaugural Soccer Gala Day champions. They went through all games undefeated and won the final 3-0 against Mary Helper of Christians Catholic College.

    IPC New Zealand Ski Trip

    The biennial New Zealand Ski Trip returned after a 7-year hiatus in the June/July holidays. Thirty students and four staff signed up for a 9-day trip of a lifetime across the South Island of New Zealand. The schedule included five days skiing/snowboarding across three different mountains, with jet boating and mountain luging thrown in for good measure. The boys were in for one wild ride!

    The first day saw the tour arrive in Christchurch at midnight, followed by a wee hours bus ride to Methven, where they would spend their first three nights at the Cedar Lodge Chalets. Reports of fresh snow on Mount Hutt cast aside any thoughts of tiredness. The boys were excited to strap on a snowboard or pair of skis, most of them for the first time. Under the guidance of their private instructors, the boys “pizza’d” and “floating leafed” their way through the first few days on the slopes. Whilst for some it was a steep learning curve, the boys emulated the resilience and adaptability of the Kea as they endeavoured to master their new Mountainous habitat.

    Following two days of racing down Mount Hutt, the boys jumped on the bus and headed South to Wānaka. Highlights of the journey included: sampling local pastries for morning tea in Geraldine, lunch and a snowball fight in Lake Takepo, and braving the Lindis Pass in a Blizzard before they arrived at their next destination.

    The boys breakfasted before sunup and travelled up through the clouds to reach the summit of Cardrona. The powdery slopes of Cardrona showed why they are some of the most beloved Alpine playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere. On both days, students were treated to beautiful, Blue Bird days. Just like at Mount Hutt, the boys were greeted by fresh powder on the first morning as they were keen to push themselves to continue their skiing/snowboarding journey. Under the expert guidance of their private instructors, they honed their skills in the morning before exploring the diverse mountain terrain in the afternoons. The group was even lucky enough on the second day to use the Mountain's brand-new chair lift, which opened for the first time. Dinners in Wānaka were at a variety of local restaurants and nights were spent walking the lake and enjoying the local ice cream, before retiring to the hotel's games rooms for cards and chilling out. 

    After two jam-packed days on the slopes of Cardrona, the travel day to Christchurch came at an opportune time to rest their bodies. A short trip through the beautiful Crown Ranges saw the group in Queenstown before lunch for their thrilling JetBoat through the Shotover Canyons at over 85km/hr. The boys had a chance to relax as they enjoyed some free time in Queenstown to get a few souvenirs and their parents a thank-you gift.

    The second last day of the tour saw the boys head up to The Remarkables for their final chance to hone their skills. The mountain was heaving with crowds as the New Zealand school holidays were in full swing. But not even a mountain-wide blackout could dampen the spirits of the boys as they made the most of their time, riding until the last chairlift of the day. A final tour dinner at the SkyLine restaurant put an exclamation point on the tour. The group enjoyed an extravagant buffet of New Zealand’s finest cuisines as they took in the incredible views of Queenstown at night.

    The final day had arrived, and a mid-afternoon flight allowed the boys one last chance to enjoy the adrenaline capital of New Zealand. The morning was spent racing mates down the mountain on luges. Before a feast of Fergburger for lunch, and some last-minute shopping closed out the tour.

    Thank you to Mr Collier, Mr Jackson, Mr Hoffensetz and Mr Turner for supervising the boys on a trip of a lifetime with their mates.

    Current year 9 and 10 students, stay tuned in early 2026 for your chance to jump on board the 2027 New Zealand Ski Tour.  It is sure to be another fantastic adventure!

    Year 11 Visual Arts

    On Tuesday 22nd of July, nine of our talented Senior Visual Art students visited the Strand Ephemera exhibition in Townsville as part of their studies into Arts practices and theories. Along with teachers Ms Deepwater and Ms Guazzo, the boys were all inspired and amazed by the wide range of artmaking concepts and methods on display along the Townsville Strand. One of our stops included an impromptu conversation with the award-winning artist Marion Gaemers, who happened to have the Chanel Seven news crew with her, and one of our boys was interviewed for a spot in the nightly local news bulletin! Our boys represented the College with pride while interacting with the artworks, the public, and during their study session. This experience will support the boys as they progress into Year 12, using the inspiration they gained today as the starting point for their culminating body of work.

    Students on School Grounds Outside School Hours

    Ignatius Park College has an enviable co-curricular program that operates outside school hours for a number of activities. All these activities are supervised by College staff and operate with parent and/or College permission.

    For students arriving at school before the school day begins and remaining behind after the school day concludes, supervision is provided by school staff from 8.10am until the start of homeroom at 8.30am and after the school day concludes at 3.00pm until 3.20pm. School bells ring at 8.10am and 3.20pm to indicate the beginning and end of this supervision.

    Parents are reminded that unless students are taking part in supervised outside school activities, they will not be supervised by school staff except during the period from 8.10 am and until 3.20pm. Parents should ensure that suitable arrangements are in place to ensure the supervision of their students outside these times. While school gates will be open before and after these times, this is to provide access to staff and for students attending these supervised activities.
